Theresa Edwards asked: Adam and Eve had many children after Cain, Abel, and Seth. As recorded in Genesis, they, and their children, lived to be hundreds of years old, which was way beyond the 120 average years of humankind (Gen. 6:3). The sons and daughters of Adam and Eve, living such extensive lives, must have traveled all over the world. Some became kings and rulers of nations, heroes of myths and legends, and some even worshipped as gods. The religious flamboyancy after Adam and Eve arrived is residual evidence of their influence over the rest of mankind. He recognized these differences by acknowledging them as a god, or son or daughter of a god or goddess who mated with a human, as is clearly reflected in Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Norse, and even extends to far Eastern religions and mythologies. Prior to 4000 B. C. mankind worshiped mainly forces of nature such as wind spirits, or volcano gods and such. He relied on the blessings of nature to produce good crops or increase in herds, and later gave them more humanistic features yet still possessing powers over nature.
The descendants of Adam and Eve also knew they were different from the rest of humankind. They actually knew and interacted with their great-great-great-great-grandfather because of their longevity. The sons of Adam and Eve, and their future generations, were alive during the time of Noah. According to the years of Adam, Noah was born in 1056 and died in the year 2006. This translates to 2948 B. C. to 1998 B. C., if we concur that Adam arrived around 4004 B. C. Adam’s grandson, Enos, son of Seth, was born in the year 235 and died in 1140, (or 3769 B. C. to 2864 B. C.), which is 84 years after Noah was born! Adam and Seth were the only two (besides Enoch, who was translated into heaven), to die before the birth of Noah. We are not taught these facts in most churches. From Seth to Lamech, Noah’s father, all were living during the same period. Lamech was already 56 years old when Adam died.
To clarify again, if 4004 B. C. is equivalent to the year 0 for Adam, (not his creation, but his exile from Paradise and beginning of life as a mortal), and he lived for 930 years on the earth, then Adam lived until only 126 years before the birth of Noah. His son, Seth, lived for 912 years and died only 14 years before Noah’s birth, around 2962 B. C.
The fact that these generations, or families of Adam, were all alive at the same time is fascinating and rarely discussed in Bible studies, and even less mentioned in churches. It is quite common for people to assume Adam lived and begat and then died, Seth lived and begat and then died, and so on. To better comprehend this concept of the longevity of the patriarchs, just imagine your great ancestor of 1100 A. D. is still alive, as are all his children’s children’s children, etc. up to the present year. What a family reunion that would be!
The descendants of Adam not only knew they were different from the rest of humankind, they also knew they were the descendants of the first two human beings created. They knew Adam and Eve were once immortal beings who lived in the garden of God. These generations of Adam were known as the sons of God.
Chapter 6:1-2 of Genesis tell us, “And it came to pass, when men began to multiple on the earth and daughters were born unto them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men… and they took them wives of all which they chose.” The generations from Adam to Noah are the sons of God, not fallen angels, which married into mankind. Their offspring were the “mighty men of old…of renown,” known throughout the earth. This tells us there was definitely a difference between the sons of God and mankind upon earth. Mankind was multiplying on earth, and their daughters were fair in appearance. The offspring of Adam and Eve and their future generations married the daughters of Sixth Day man. (Please refer to the article Man Before Adam on this website).
This also gives us a clear explanation of from where Cain’s wife came. Simply, Cain’s wife was of mankind. Cain was one of the sons of God, as was Seth, Enoch, and the rest of the generations of Adam. The generations of mankind did not evolve from the intermarrying of brothers and sisters, as some propose. This is another key to solving the mystery of the Creation and understanding from where we came. It closes the gap between choosing to believe we are created beings, or choosing to believe we came from apes. One reason why people believe in Darwinism is proof that mankind existed prior to 4004 B. C., thus, we must have evolved from apes! We can now intelligently decide because we now understand the story of Creation as revealed in Genesis. We can choose to believe we used to live in trees or we can decide to believe a Divine Intelligence, one that gave us intelligence in order to come to know Him as our Creator.
Also in Genesis 6:4, giants are mentioned as having existed in those days. These people of great stature were of the first generation of mankind created on the earth. God had not determined the longevity of man to be 120 years until that time mentioned in chapter six, which was after the Flood. Reading the Scripture further on in time, even to the time David made himself know by slaying the giant of the Philistines, we discover that giants still existed long after the Flood. How could this be? The reason is the sons of Noah also married into mankind and passed on that genetic code of the Nephilim, or giants. Of course, this is not to say they all married giant women, but that the women (and men) they did marry were of the same genetic pool of the first generation of mankind created on the sixth day. This also dispels the theory of angels copulating with human women and producing giants. Although the word “Nephilim” means fallen or mighty ones, were not Adam and Eve also fallen ones?
To mankind on earth, the descendants of Adam and Eve that married into mankind were literally the “sons of God.” They were the children of the people from Paradise, or, heavenly beings who came to earth possessing great knowledge and wisdom. Not only did they possess the sacred knowledge of good and evil, but also a greater understanding of such concepts as math, astronomy, architecture, etc. Many branches of knowledge expanded immensely after the arrival of Adam and Eve and the intermarriages of their children with mankind. Even writing did not exist prior to the arrival of Adam and Eve. Almost all of their descendants lived for nearly a thousand years each, so they must have had a vast influence over mankind. To mankind on earth, a new breed of people had appeared. They were a superior race not of alien descent, but of godly descent. This gives us a better understanding of how those myths and legends of earthly women giving birth to children of the gods or angels came to be.
This chart shows the year of birth, age at first born, and the year and age of death of the descendants of Adam through Noah. As you can see by comparison of the years indicated, from Enos on, all were alive at the time of Noah’s birth.
Adam was born in the year 0 (4004 B.C.) lived 930 years and died in 930 (3074 B.C.)
Seth was born in the year 130 (912 B.C.) lived 912 years and died in 1042 (2962 B.C.)
Enos was born in 235 (3769 B.C.) lived 905 years and died in 1140 (2864 B.C.)
Cainan was born in 325 (3679 B.C.) lived 910 years and died in 1235 (2769 B.C.)
Mahalaleel was born in 395 (3609 B.C.) lived 895 years and died in 1290 B.C.)
Jared was born in 460 (3544 B.) lived 962 years and died in 1422 (2572 B.C.)
Enoch was born in 622 (3382 B.C.) lived 365 years and was translated in 987 (3017 B.C.)
Methuselah was born in 687 (3317 B.C.) lived 969 years and died in 1656 (2348 B.C.)
Lamech was born in 874 (3130 B.C.) lived 777 years and died in 1651 (2353 B.)
Noah was born in 1056 (2948 B.C.) lived 950 years and died in 1998 (2006 B.)
By subtracting the year of birth of one patriarch from the year of death of another patriarch, we can see that the second was still living when the first was born. Excluding Enoch, the chart shows that Seth did not die until 2962 B.C., only 14 years before the birth of Noah in 2948 B. C. Adam died in 3074 B. C., 56 years after the birth of Lamech, Noah’s father, and 126 years before Noah’s birth. All of the following sons, from Enos on, were living during the same time. The last living patriarch before the Flood was Methuselah. This is not to say he died in the Flood, but that he died the year of the Flood.
We are told in Genesis that the Flood occurred during the 600th year of Noah. This would date the Flood, according to the generations of Adam, to have occurred 1656 years after Adam, or 2348 B. C. Within a short 1656 years since the appearance of Adam and his families and the introduction of the knowledge of good and evil, mankind became so corrupt God regretted ever having created him upon the earth. They not only taught the sacred knowledge of good and evil to mankind, but that knowledge became a genetic inheritance of their offspring (and extends to modern man). God chose to end that world and begin anew (which He also later regretted).
When the last of the great patriarchs died, Methuselah, the only heads of the generations of Adam were Noah and his immediate family. Noah’s wives, and his son’s wives, who were of mankind also, were the families that re-populated the earth. The sons of Noah also lived to be hundreds of years old, but only about half the age of the previous generations of Adam.
Noah lived another 350 years after the Flood, and all the families of Noah dwelt together and spoke the same language. They journeyed from the final resting place of the ark in Mt. Ararat to the plains in the land of Shinar (now modern Iraq). Nimrod was the grandson of Ham, son of Noah, and was the founder of Babel (Babylon). From there the families were spread abroad the whole face of the earth. The sons of Japheth settled in the isles of the Mediterranean, the sons of Ham in North Africa, and the sons of Shem toward the east.
Man today is descended from the sons of God and sixth day man through the survival of Noah and his families. It was not until when the Hebrews began to multiply in Egypt that the nation of Israel, the descendants of the twelve sons of Jacob, came into being. They were the people who would carry the birthright of Adam and were the chosen people through whom the Son of God would be born.
Note: There is a discrepancy of approximately 173 years between the calculations below and what many scholars have determined to be the correct dates of the patriarchs. However, we are using the date of the exile of Adam as our point of origin. For instance, scholars date the death of Abraham at 1991 B. C. whereas, according to the years recorded from scripture, Abraham’s death was in 1818 B. C.
Noah was born in 1056 (2948 B.C.) lived for 950 years and died in 2006 (1998 B.C.)
Shem was born in 1556 (2448 B.C.) lived for 600 years and died in 2156 (1848 B.C.)
Arphaxad was born in 1656 (2348 B.C.) lived 438 years and died in 2094 (1910 B.C.)
Salah was born in 1691 (2303 B.C.) lived 433 years and died in 2124 (1880 B.C.)
Eber was born in 1721 (2283 B.C.) lived 464 years and died in 2185 (1819 B.C.)
Peleg was born in 1755 (2249 B.C.) lived 239 years and died in 2006 (1998 B.C.)
Reu was born in 1785 (2219 B.C.) lived 239 years and died in 2024 (1980 B.C.)
Serug was born in 1817 (2187 B.C.) lived 230 years and died in 2047 (1957 B.C.)
Nahom was born in 1847 (2157 B.C.) lived 148 years and died in 1995 (2009 B.C.)
Terah was born in 1876 (2128 B.C.) lived 205 years and died in 2081 (1923 B.C.)
Abram was born in 2011 (1993 B.C.) lived 175 years and died in 2186 (1818 B.C.)
Isaac was born in 2111 (1883 B.C.) lived 180 years and died in 2291 (1713 B.C.)
Jacob was born in 2171 (1833 B.C.) lived 147 years and died in 2318 (1686 B.C.)
This chart shows that Noah died only 5 years before the birth of Abraham, who was 145 years old when Shem died, and Isaac was only 45. We can also better understand how the patriarchs passed down their history during their generations and how such stories as the Flood became intertwined with other legends of the Deluge throughout other regions and religions all over the world. As the sons of Noah and their families were spread abroad, they carried their history with them. We find remnants of the Creation and the Flood in all cultures over the earth. Many interpretations of those events have changed throughout the generations of mankind, but all had their origins from their ancestors, the sons of Noah, a son of Adam, a son of God.
Noah and his three sons were from the pre-Flood era and therefore were well informed of that period of history. When the families of Noah were separated and spread abroad, these stories took on the flare of their own native tribe and culture. Thus, we see the many similarities woven through each version of these stories with the added characteristics of each region. The Mediterranean people had their mythological gods and goddesses and their own version of ancient events, as did oriental sagas of gods and demons, Norse mythologies, African tribal legends, and ancient Sanskrit details of wars between good and evil. The only confusion came when they lost sight of exactly who was God. While paganism was the religion of the time, it became a great consternation to the people of Israel and was the cause of many a dethroning of her kings and punishment of her people.
This is what makes the good news of the gospel of Jesus so revealing. He came to re-inform the world who is the true God and to provide a means for humanity to return to a state of immortality.
